A Textual Commentary On 1 Corinthians 13:3
(a) 1 Cor. xiii. 3, Jerome (ed. Vall. vij . 517 e) mentions the same diversity of reading , καυθήσωμαι and καυχήσωμαι, which we still find : an error on the one side or the other of part of a letter. That the former is the true reading need not be doubted. Perhaps the rarity of a subj. fut. helped the introduction of the latter of these two readings, as a means of avoiding a form which sounded strange.
Great care must be taken not to be hasty in assuming that we have express testimony to a reading ; all particulars of the evidence must first be weighed.
