Tischendorf 1:6

Tischendorf 1:6

A Textual Commentary On Matthew 1:6

(a) Ἰεσσαὶ δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Δαυὶδ τὸν βασιλέα – For Δαυὶδ τὸν βασιλέα, see Josephus’ Antiquitates Judaicae, v, ix, 4:

Ὠβήδουδὲ γίνεται παῖς Ἰεσσαῖος, τούτου Δαβίδης ὁ βασιλεύσας καὶ παισὶ τοῖς αὐτοῦ καταλιπὼν τὴν ἡγεμονίαν ἐπὶ μίαν καὶ εἴκοσι γενεὰς ἀνδρῶν. The son of Obed was Jesse, and David was his son, who was king, and left his dominions to his sons for one and twenty generations. (Whiston’s translation)

τὸν Δαυὶδ τὸν βασιλέα – Although an apposition with the article follows the proper name, yet Δαυὶδ also takes the article, nor for the sake of uniformiy with the preceding name (de Wette), but in order to designate David demonstratively, as already marked out in verse 1. In verse 15, also the article before Ἰωσήφ, which is accompanied by an apposition, has, in keeping with the deep significance of his paternal relation to Jesus, demonstrative power. The τὸν βασιλέα also, and the subsequent emphatic repetition of  ὁ βασιλεὺς, are a distinction for David, with whom the Messiah’s genealogy entered upon the kingly dignity. (H.A.W. Meyer, 38-39)

(b) Δαυὶδ δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Σολομῶνα  – Σαλομων is indeclinable in Codex Sinaiticus as usually in LXX. The LXX (of A and B) has Σαλομων. See 1Chr 3:10 (LXX) υἱοὶ Σαλωμων Pοβοαμ Aβια υἱὸς αὐτοῦ Aσα υἱὸς αὐτοῦ Iωσαφατ υἱὸς αὐτοῦ.  But the best MSS in Matt 1:6 have the accusative Σολομῶνα.

(c) Δαυιδ δε ο βασιλευς εγεννησεν – The Peshitta reads ܕ݁ܰܘܺܝܕ݂ ܐܰܘܠܶܕ݂ ܠܰܫܠܶܝܡܳܘܢ (David begot Solomon). According to Bengel, the best MSS of Vulgate omit ὁ βασιλεὺς. The appellation ο βασιλευς (the King), has been omitted by some early editors, but wrongly. The kingship of David is twice mentioned here, as is the Babylonian captivity afterwards. The same title is understood, though not expressed, after the names of Solomon and his successors, as far as ver. 11. David is, however, called especially the King, not only because he is the first king mentioned in this pedigree, but also because his throne is promised to the Messiah. See Luke i. 32. (Gnome, Bengel)

(d) ἐκ τῆς τοῦ Οὐρίου – Οὐρίου is the LXX form. See 2Sa 11:3 καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Δαυιδ καὶ ἐζήτησεν τὴν γυναῖκα, καὶ εἶπεν Οὐχὶ αὕτη Βηρσαβεε θυγάτηρ Ελιαβ γυνὴ Ουριου τοῦ Χετταίου;
