A Textual Commentary On Matthew 3:2

(a) The conjunction καὶ is omitted in א, B, and Coptic versions. But Coptic versions are, in a case like this, of little weight as the conjunction can be found in Syriac versions and Latin Vulgate. The only real authority is that of Codices Vaticanus and Sinaiticus, which when, as here, in opposition to all the other manuscripts, even its closest allies, is very slender, especially when, as here, running counter to internal evidence, and that from the utter improbability that the particle should have been inserted in all the manuscripts except two, for the purpose of conforming to καὶ λέγειν μετανοεῖτε in Matt 4:17. According to Bloomfield, it was rather removed by philologists, who were aware that in pure classical Greek composition the participle would not be employed as in reality useless, though unpractised, and especially foreign, writers might think the καὶ required – not aware of this gerundial use of the participle, which is found even in a participle subjoined to another participle.

(b) μετανοεῖτε – on the importance of repentance in Jewish religion, see Talmud (Yoma 86b, דף פו,ב גמרא, תלמוד בבלי, פרק ח – מסכת יומא).

היה רבי מאיר אומר: גדולה תשובה שבשביל יחיד שעשה תשובה מוחלין לכל העולם כולו

Rabbi Meir used to say, Great is repentance. for on account of an individual who repents, the sins of all the world are forgiven,
