A Textual Commentary On Matthew 11:17

(a) In Mt. II.I7 (and the parallel in Lk. 7.32) the complaint, “We have piped (ηὐλήσαμεν) to you, and you did not dance; we have wailed, and you did not mourn,” was undoubtedly read by Tatian with a verb of singing instead of playing. Both Eastern and Western branches of Tatianic tradition agree in this variant. Thus, the Arabic (غنينا) and the Persian Harmony (cantammo [sarwad guftīm]) join with the Venetian (noi avemo chantato), the Tuscan (noi cantamo), and the Dutch Harmonies (wi habben u g(h)esongen).
