(a) καὶ ἐλθὼν κατῴκησεν εἰς πόλιν λεγομένην Ναζαρέτ – The town written Ναζαρέθ, Ναζαραθ, or Ναζαρέτ, representing נָצְרַת. Ναζαρὰ (נָצְרָה) the reading found in Ƿ70 is an Aramaic form of Ναζαρέτ. Peshitta ܢܳܨܪܰܬ݂ , though with different vowels, gives final θ, as many uncials and cursives read, against Textus Receptus, Codex Vaticanus, Codex Bezae, etc.
(b) ὅπως πληρωθῇ τὸ ῥηθὲν διὰ τῶν προφητῶν ὅτι Ναζωραῖος κληθήσεται – Ναζωραῖος presupposes a form נצורי from נצרת = נצורת. It derives from נצר (branch). Jesus was called ὁ Ναζωραῖος not only because He had dwelt at Ναζαρέτ but also because He is the Branch, the Messiah, prophesied by Prophet Isaiah. In Isaiah 11:1, the branch (נצר) from the roots of Jesse, is interpreted as the Messiah (משיחא) in Targum Jonathan.

(c) Tischendorf decides that we ought always to read Ναζαρεθ in St Matthew, Ναζαρετ in St John (Proleg. N. T. p. lv, note) : yet the Peshitta in all twelve places that the name occurs, and the Curetonian in the four wherein it is extant (Mt 2:23; 4:13; 21:11; Luke 2:51) have the aspirate (ܢܨܪܐ), and being written in a kindred dialect, claim all the more consideration. Everywhere the manuscripts vary considerably : thus in Mk 1:9 Ναζαρετ is found in א,B,L,Γ,Δ, 33, 69, and most cursives (17 of Scrivener’s), Origen, the Philoxenian Syriac and Old Latin a.b.f; Ναζαρατ in A,P : but Ναζαρεθ in D (not its Latin version, d) E,F,H,K,M,U,V. 1, and at least 16 other cursives (but not Cod. 69 by the first hand, as Tregelles states), the Vulgate, c, the Memphitic and Gothic as well as the elder Syriac. In Matth. 4:13 Cod. B has Ναζαρα by the first hand with Z, 33 (so 3 in Luke 4:16); C,P, Δ Ναζαραθ, which is found in Δ nine times, in A twice : so that regarding the orthography of this word (which is inconstant also in the Received text) no reasonable certainty is to be attained.

(d) To sum up the evidence upon this question, the importance of which must apologise for the length of the preceding discussion: — The commencement of the third chapter of St. Matthew’s Gospel shows that something had preceded, analogous to what we read in chap. ii. All the ancient manuscripts now extant, as well as all the ancient versions (some of which are of extreme antiquity) contain the two first chapters. Justin Martyr, Hegesippus, and Clement of Alexandria, who all flourished in the second century, have referred to them ; as also have Irenaeus and all the Fathers who immediately succeeded him, and whose testimony is undisputed. Celsus, Porphyry, and Julian, the most acute and inveterate enemies of the Gospel, in the second, third, and fourth centuries, likewise admitted them. “Thus, we have one continued and unbroken series of testimony,” of Christians as well as of persons inimical to the Christian faith,” from the days of the apostles to the present time ; and in opposition to this we find only a vague report of the state of a Hebrew copy of Matthew’s Gospel, said to be received amongst an obscure and unrecognised description of Hebrew Christians, who are admitted, even by the very writers who claim the support of their authenticity, to have mutilated the copy which they possessed, by removing the genealogy.”‘

(e) There were, it goes without saying, other reasons besides an ascetical tendency which prompted Tatian to make adjustments in the text of the Gospels. He was doubtless moved, for example, by literalistic considerations. When he read in Mt. 2.23 that Jesus “dwelt in a city called Nazareth that what had been spoken through the prophets (διὰ τῶν προφητῶν) might be fulfilled, ‘He shall be called a Nazarene,'” he would have been uncertain and perplexed – as others have been since his day – in attempting to discover the precise Old Testament references to which the Evanglist alludes. So far from there being a plurality of prophets who had spoken of this matter, it is difficult enough to find in but one prophet an allusion which could have suggested to the author of the First Gospel such a prediction.2 Tatian, it appears, sought to avoid the multiplication of difficulties and read the singular number (διὰ τοῦ προφήτου). This variant was perpetuated in the Tatianic tradition of the following centuries. The Arabic Diatessaron (النبي), the Dutch Harmonies (Liege: die prophetie; Stuttgart: den prophete), both forms of the Italian Harmonies (Tuscan: per lo profeta; Venetian: cossi fo conpiude le profeçie), as well as the Persian Diatessaron (per La lingua del profeta) -all preserve the singular number either as “prophet” or “prophecy.” The Sinaitic, Curetonian, Peshitta, and Palestinian Syriac agree in reading ܒܢܒܝܐ.
2 Doubtless it was the Hebrew נצר of Is. 11.1 which supplied the Evangelist with the germinal idea developed in Mt. 2.23; there is no evidence, however, that Tatian could read Hebrew.
