A Textual Commentary On Matthew 7:14
(a) Ὅτι or τί? The scribe of Codex Sinaiticus originally wrote ὅτι. But he (or someone else) cancelled ὅ later to make it τί. The majority of the MSS read τί, and this is also the reading of the most ancient versions. Ludolf Küster would trace τί to error of scribes employed on the Latin copies of the Old Latin versions, from which it was, he thinks, introduced into those pretty many Greek MSS, which, even before the age of Jerome, were all “exemplaria Latine castigata.” But it does not furnish us with a right key to unlock the difficulty here since that τί was more ancient than the age of the Old Latin version is plain from its having place in the Peshitta and Syriac Curetonian versions. Henry Alford pronounces that τί was first ‘a clerical error, and then retained, as it was imagined that it might mean quam.‘
