Matthew 1:20

But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the LORD appeared to him in a dream, saying, Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.

Matt 1:20 [Textus Receptus (Elzevir) (1624)]

A Textual Commentary On Matthew 1:20

(a) ἰδού, ἄγγελος Κυρίου. Markland, in Bowyer’s Conjectures on the New Testament, has thrown out  some observations on the use of ἰδοὺ here and in some other passages, which I am surprised should have come from so admirable a scholar. He thinks the ἰδοὺ was often put in by the Evangelist (in a sense equivalent to—attend, reader!), or was foisted in by some Christian as a kind of N.B. This, he thinks the case in Luke 23,14 and 15, and in innumerable other cases. I must be permitted to question whether it ever owes its origin to either of the two causes just stated.
The truth is, that as in the Hebrew הנה perpetually occurs, so in the Hellenistic Greek does ἰδοὺ, and sometimes ecce in the Latin, as in Virg. Æn.2, 270.”in somnis, ecce, ante oculos mœstissimus Hector visus adesse mihi.”
In the Greek of the classical writers it is indeed rare:but there are examples, as in Euripid. Here. Fur. 1066. Matth. ἰδοὺ, τί δεμοῖς, νοῦς ὅπως, ὡρμισμένος – πρόσειμι κ.τ.λ. where I am surprised that Musgrave should stumble at he ἰδοὺ, and conjecture ἴου, which would be quite unsuitable to the dignified firmness of Hercules, as it is well represented by the present reading.
(S. T. Bloomfield, Recensio Synoptica Annotationis Sacræ,  vol. 1, pp. 6-7)

(b) Μαριὰμ – According to Bengel, this termination was more usual in early times (from the example of the Hebrew and the Septuagint) than the Greek form Μαρία, which soon, however, prevailed. St. Matthew, therefore, uses Μαριὰμ here, in the angel’s address, for the name of our Lord’s mother; but Μαρίας (the genitive case of the Greek Μαρία) when speaking of her (Matt 1:16 & Matt 1:18) in his own person ; and in like manner, he employs the Greek form  when mentioning other women of the same name. And St. Luke does mostly the same.

The scribe of Codex Vaticanus probably mistaken –M for –N or thought that this was a mistake and changed it to Greek accusative termination –N, Μαρίαν (also in Rom 16:6). See Μεσσίαν in  John 1:41 which is accusative for Μεσσίας.

Despite overwhelming evidence for Μαριὰμ Westcott-Hort, Eberhard Nestle, and NA27 read Μαρίαν.

(c) The common form Δαβιδ hardly belongs here ; as in MSS. this name is generally contracted ΔAΔ, δαδ ; while in the older copies in which it is expressed at length, it is given ΔΑΥΕΙΔ, and in those later, Δαυιδ. The insertion, however, of Δαβιδ in the common text as printed, may be compared with the adoption of more recent forms in MSS.: this orthography belongs so completely to the latest period of Greek pronunciation, etc, that it would only have been adopted when it conveyed just the same sound as Δαυιδ.

The form Δαβιδ owes its adoption to its introduction by Erasmus (or Froben his printer), in his first edition. The Complutensian editors both in the New Testament and the LXX. gave Δαυιδ ; and this form has been commonly adopted in that version as printed, except in the Aldine text.
