Tischendorf Mt 7:9 Tischendorf Mt 7:9

A Textual Commentary On Matthew 7:9

(a) Τίς ἐστιν ἐξ ὑμῶν ἄνθρωπος ὃν ἐὰν αἰτήσῃ – ܡܰܢܽܘ ܡܶܢܟ݂ܽܘܢ ܓ݁ܰܒ݂ܪܳܐ in Peshitta implies εστιν, but not ἐὰν; both are omitted by Codex Vaticanus. Ἐστιν is omitted by Lachmann and Tischendorf (2nd edition) though in his third edition Tischendorf restores the word; while Alford, who in his first edition bracketed it, has in his second edition cancelled it, regarding it as brought in “to help out the construction”; while Meyer thinks it was omitted for this very reason; but the end is not thus attained, since that method merely converts an anomalous construction (by a blending of two different constructions) into a thorough non-construction, and all but a barbarism. In so puzzled a matter Tischendorf has exercised a wise discretion in replacing what ought not to have been removed (S. T. Bloomfield).

(b) αἰτήσῃ or αἰτήσει? Lachmann, Tregelles, Tischendorf, Alford, Westcott-Hort, NA27 follow the latter, from א, B, Δ. Both αἰτήσῃ and αἰτήσει have internal evidence in its favour in Luke 11:12.
