A Textual Commentary On Matthew 12:5
(a) Again, things which seem to the translator irrelevant or tautological disappear . Thus Mill in his Prolegomena : notices the following omissions of this kind from the Peshitto : at Mat. xii. 5 τοῖς σάββασι is omitted where τὸ σάββατον βεβηλοῦσι follows, in Mark xiv. 68 ούτε οίδα ούτε επίσταμαι appears simply as hy wou N , and similar instances are given from Mark ix. 43, and Luke xvii. 23, xix. 43. Winer 4 gives, a list of typical omissions from the Peshitto, which includes superfluous words of time or action, as for example ευθεως, ιδου, ειτα, πάλιν, τότε, and λαβών, λέγων, εισελθων, αναστας, and the like. The construction, particularly characteristic of St. Luke, και εγενετο . . . και, disappears at least nine times, though it is found sometimes as at Mat. xi. 1 : this is the more peculiar, as it is a Hebraistic construction which one might have expected to find kept . ιδιος is often omitted, sometimes inserted : πας is often omitted without authority, Mark v. 12, Acts iii. 21, and elsewhere, as it is often inserted without authority. From the Curetonian Baethgen¹ gives similar omissions, thus John i. 26 and elsewhere αποκριθεις ειπε becomes simply ܐܡܪ (he said) where the Peshitto has in full ܘܥܢܐ ܘܐܡܪ : in the same way the simple ܐܡܪ (he said) does duty for ουκ ηρνήσατο John i. 20, and επηρώτησε λέγων Luke xxiii. 3.
