A Textual Commentary On Matthew 27:28

(a) A proved erratum in MSS. (the best in themselves) must be rejected : thus, in Matt. xxvii. 28, where the order of the words in the best ΜSS., etc., is, καὶ ἐκδύσαντες αὐτὸν χλαμύδα κοκκίνην, περιέθηκαν αὐτῷ : but here the MSS. B D and the Old Latin are cited as reading ἐνδύσαντες : of these, however, D and the Latin copies read ἐνδύσαντες αυτόν ιμάτιον πορφυρουν και, so that B stands alone in having merely ἐνδύσαντες for ἐκδύσαντες. The origin of the erratum seems to have been the parallel passage, Mark xv. 17, και ενδιδύσκουσιν (common text ενδύουσιν) αυτον πορφύραν και περιτιθέασιν αυτω πλέξαντες ακάνθινον στέφανον : hence the change of one letter, as in B, and then , to make this consistent, the addition (from John xix. 2) in D, etc. In such a case as this, it is no departure from principle, but the very contrary, to adhere to such authorities as A L, and the mass of MSS. (including 1, 33, 69) and versions, in reading ἐκδύσαντες.*

(b) Nay, even such a glaring blunder as the corruption of the Greek letter K into N in Matth. xxvii. 28 has not been without its apologists ; yet there, in the room of “And they stripped him,” Codex B and a very few witnesses of real importance would have us substitute “And they clothed him,” thus rendering the verse completely unintelligible. One or two other instances of the same nature shall be added, and that from no wish to disparage the Codex Vaticanus or to depose it from its rightful place at the head of all our textual authorities, but to shew that, like its less distinguished compeers, it is liable to err and has committed errors of the most palpable character.
