Matthew 3:10

Ἤδη δὲ ἡ ἀξίνη πρὸς τὴν ῥίζαν τῶν δένδρων κεῖται· πᾶν οὖν δένδρον μὴ ποιοῦν καρπὸν καλὸν ἐκκόπτεται καὶ εἰς πῦρ βάλλεται.

And now the axe is laid at the root of the trees; therefore, every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

A Textual Commentary On Matthew 3:10

(a) א, B, C, W, Δ, 1, Peshitta, and Vulgate omit καὶ. Bloomfield disagrees with those who thought that the text is better without καὶ as it is overloading the composition. According to Bloomfield, καὶ is epexegetical, as ἐλεύσονται δὲ ἡμέραι καὶ ὅταν ἀπαρθῇ in Luke 5:35, where the καὶ was, as found in C,F,L,M , and many cursives, in like manner removed by critics – a case which also occurs in classical writers. Considering the harshness of the construction, it is most improbable that the καὶ should have been introduced from Luke 3:8. Besides, even there the καὶ was once in one of the uncials. To cite Origen, Basil, and Didymus is useless, because those fathers would be likely to omit it in citation; and to cite versions is futile, because the καὶ could not well be expressed in them consistently with the idiom of the languages of the translators.
