A Textual Commentary On Matthew 3:17

Cf. LXX:

(b) ὁ ἀγαπητός is not an attribute of ὁ υἱός μου, but an independent title in Aramaic חביבא, that is ‘the Beloved”, the Messiah.

(c) The aorist εὐδόκησα is modelled on the aorists of the LXX in this passage, which were probably interpreted as implying the divine election of Israel, and so here the divine election of the Messiah. Cf. the aorist ἐδόθη (Matt 28:18); παρεδόθη (Matt 11:26) (Willoughby C. Allen).
