ἐγὼ δὲ λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι πᾶς ὁ ὀργιζόμενος τῷ ἀδελφῷ αὐτοῦ εἰκῆ ἔνοχος ἔσται τῇ κρίσει· ὃς δ’ ἂν εἴπῃ τῷ ἀδελφῷ αὐτοῦ ῥακά ἔνοχος ἔσται τῷ συνεδρίῳ· ὃς δ’ ἂν εἴπῃ μωρέ ἔνοχος ἔσται εἰς τὴν γέενναν τοῦ πυρός.

But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother without just cause will be subject to the judgment, and whoever says to his brother, ‘Raka,’ will be subject to the Sanhedrin. But whoever says, ‘You fool,’ will be subject to the Gehenna of fire.

A Textual Commentary On Matthew 5:22

(a) Codices Vaticanus and Sinaiticus omit εἰκῆ. This omission is supported by Ƿ67 and Vulgate. Peshitta and Coptic versions support εἰκῆ. Considering the fact that the Coptic versions belong to the same text-type with א and B, the missing word was probably unintentionally omitted by the scribes of א and B. Chrysostom, Cyril, Theodoret, Hilary, Optatus, Lucifer, of the same age, all recognize the presence of εικη in the text. The Fathers are notoriously and habitually inexact in statements of this kind. The words of Jerome may prove that the word was wanting in a good number of copies in his day, but that is the utmost they can prove in the face of such counter evidence. The ancient witnesses in its favour are more than two to one, while in the later MSS there is scarcely an instance of its omission.

John Cassian contented that this adverb εἰκῇ is a later addition to the scriptural text, ‘by those who did not wish to ban wrath altogether’ (παρὰτῶν µὴ βουλοµένων τελείως ἐκκόπτειν τὴν ὀργήν). This gloss does not appear in the Migne text, but it is there in Codex 573 (Folio 44r), which provides a text of this treatise that is more complete and in far better Greek than that of Migne’s. This assertion by Cassian, however, was tantamount to rejecting John Chrysostom. For Chrysostom is one of the few authors accepting and entertaining the adverb εἰκῇ in this scriptural portion, indeed he is the one who does so frequently and confidently. It is also noteworthy that, although Cyril of Alexandria employed this formula, too, the adverb εἰκῇ was omitted by a compiler in one of the florilegia, mostly published in the sixth century during the Monophysite controversy. Basil of Caesarea appears to use both alternatives. Today the mainstream scriptural text dismisses εἰκῇ, which nevertheless is the option of almost all Christian authors quoting Matt.5:22.
