A Textual Commentary On Matthew 5:47

(a) ασπασησθε or ασπασησθαι? During the early centuries of the Christian era certain vowels and diphthongs of the Greek language lost their distinctive sounds and came to be pronounced alike e.g. the diphthong αι and the vowel ε. As a result the second person plural ending –σθε sounded the same as the ending of the middle and passive infinitive -σθαι, accounting for the variants ασπασησθε and ασπασησθαι, and many other passages. Ασπασησθαι found in D and W should be rejected as the reading of the majority manuscripts is supported by Codices Vaticanus and Sinaiticus.

(b) ἀδελφοὺς or φίλους? The latter is supported by the majority of the Greek manuscripts but the former, found in Codices Vaticanus, Sinaiticus, and Bezae, is attested by Peshitta, Syriac Curetonian and the Vulgate.

(c) Μatt. ν. 47. Ἐὰν ἀσπάσησθε τοὺς ΦΙΛΟΥΣ is the reading of the Complutensian edition, and of most of the Greek MSS. as Erasmus testifies, and in all, as Stephens ; yet in their edition, and in almost all afterwards, from the authority of the Vulgate, it is changed into ΑΔΕΛΦΟΥΣ ; and the like of many others.
(William Bowyer, Critical Conjectures And Observations On The New Testament, 1812, p. 3)

(d) τελῶναι or ἐθνικοὶ?

In the late P. Oxy I. 12613 (A.D. 572) ἐθνικός is used of a “collector” of taxes, a sense not found elsewhere. In MGr the adj. means “national.”
(Moulton & Milligan, Vocabulary of the Greek New Testament, p. 181)
