A Textual Commentary On Matthew 5:48

(a) ὡς or ὥσπερ ? It is highly possible that the scribe of א and B mistaken ΠEΡ in ΩCΠΕΡ for ΠHΡ. Codex Washingtonensis, which for this verse is of the same text type as א and B, reads ὥσπερ instead of ὡς. Look at the similarity between ΠEΡ and ΠHΡ in Codex Washingtonensis. See also Codex E.

Mat 5:48 (Codex Washingtonensis) Mat 5:48 (Codex Washingtonensis)

This error seems to have arisen while the copyist was holding a sequence of letters (ΩCΠΕΡOΠHΡ) in his somewhat treacherous memory between the glance at the manuscript to be copied and the writing down (ΩCOΠHΡ) of what he saw there.

(b) ὁ ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς – Codices Vaticanus, Sinaiticus, Washingtonianus, and Family 1 have οὐράνιος. Tischendorf quotes the Peshitta to support οὐρανοῖς, but G.H. Williams doubts the evidence for οὐρανοῖς. Τὸν ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς in Matt 5:16, and ὁ οὐράνιος in Matt 6:14, are each rendered by ܕ݁ܒ݂ܰܫܡܰܝܳܐ ; in neither place is there any variation in the Greek.
