A Textual Commentary On Matthew 8:2

(a) Ἐλθὼν or προσελθὼνἘλθὼν of the Majority Text was probably read by Peshitta (ܐܬܐ). Compare rendering of Matt 8:19 where ܩܪܒπροσελθων (א, B, E, Δ). According to Bloomfield, προσελθων seems to be a mere correction of somewhat homely Greek. The simple verb has elsewhere been converted into the compound by critics for the sake of imparting more of definiteness to the sense. But the editor thinks it was merely a mistake made by the scribe who pronounced to himself the words λεπρὸς ἐλθὼν (or λεπρὸς προσελθὼν) which he was transcribing, confusion arose over the sound of the word πρὸς from λεπρὸς with the word ἐλθὼν (or προσελθὼν), accounting for variants as either λεπρὸς προσελθὼν or λεπρὸς ἐλθὼν.
