A Textual Commentary On Matthew 8:1
(a) Καταβάντι or καταβάντος? Both words found only once in the New Testament. According to Bloomfield, καταβάντος avoids the pleonasm involved in the repeated αὐτῷ which, however, cannot be said to be impure Greek, since the repetition often occurs in Herodotus, and sometimes in Thucydides, also elsewhere in New Testament as in Matt 5:5, Matt 5:23, and Matt 5:28, where the genitive ἐλθόντος was obtruded in nearly the same MSS as here; also at Matt 9:27, where some copies substitute the genitive; others as B, D, remove the second αὐτῷ. See also Acts 22:6 and Acts 22:17.
