A Textual Commentary On Matthew 8:5

(a) Textus Receptus has τῷ Ἰησοῦ which is omitted by א, B, C, W, majority of Greek MSS, Syriac Curetonian, Vulgate, Sahidic, and Bohairic.

This variant arises from faulty eyesight of the copyist. The copyist who was afflicted with astigmatism found it difficult to distinguish between Greek letters which resemble one another (e.g. Δ and A, EIC and IC), particularly when the previous scribe had not written with care. Thus in uncial script ΔΕ Τω IC EIC could be mistaken for ΔΕ ΑΥΤω EIC, and vice versa. But the Textus Receptus reads IY (Ἰησοῦ) and not IC.

See the similarity between IC and EIC in Codex Washingtonensis :

Mt 8:5 in Codex Washingtonensis Mt 8:5 in Codex Washingtonensis
Mt 8:7 in Codex Washingtonensis Mt 8:7 in Codex Washingtonensis

Haplography (erroneous act of writing once what should be written twice by a copyist) or dittography (erroneous act of repeating a letter, word, phrase or combination of letters by a copyist)?
