A Textual Commentary On Matthew 10:15

(a) Γομόρρων or Γομόῤῥας? For plural Γομόρρων, C, D, L, M, P, and 30 cursives (according to Tischendorf) have singular Γομόῤῥας. The singular form is used in 2 Pet 2:6, Jude 7, and some passages of the Septuagint, as Gen 10:19, Gen 14:2. Yet the plural occurs in many more, Gen 13:10, Gen 19:24, Isa 1:9, Isa 13:19, Zeph 2:9, Deut 29:23, Amos 4:11. It occurs also in Mk 6:11, and if genuine in Rom 9:20, and in 2 Pet 2:6 some copies have Γομόρρων, which Jude may have read in his copy. That the plural was the more ancient form can hardly be doubted (Bloomfield). And being the more rare and recondite it was more likely to be altered into the usual singular than the reverse. There are frequent instances of cities which had first a plural form, being afterwards, altered to a singular one. Σοδόμα, however, always retained its plural form, though the Hebrew סדם is singular, meaning burning, conflagration, the city of burning.
